Executive Summary Rewrite
Turns a long document into the paragraph an executive reads: answer first, three supports, one ask.
For: Anyone whose report or deck goes to someone who reads only the first paragraph
You get: A summary under 150 words that a senior reader can act on without opening the rest
Different: Builds the summary as a pyramid, answer on top and exactly three supports under it, and traces every sentence to a line in the source so nothing new creeps in.
When to use it
The user has a long document that a senior person will read for thirty seconds, and needs the opening paragraph to carry the whole thing. The document in, one summary out, with a trace table showing where each sentence came from.
Not for writing the document itself, and not for a periodic status report with colours and milestones (the Project Status Reporter pack does that). This is one summary of one document.
What it asks you
One message, numbered.
- The document. Paste the whole thing. If it is a deck, paste the slide text in order with slide numbers.
- Who reads the summary, and what they will do with it: decide, approve, forward, be informed.
- The one thing you most need them to take away. If you are not sure, say so and I will propose it from the document.
- Any limit you are given: words, lines or characters.
If the user does not know the reader, write for a senior person with no time who did not attend the meetings. If the user cannot name the takeaway, propose one from the document's conclusion and show two alternatives in one line each. Never add a fact, number or recommendation that is not in the source. If the document does not contain an answer, the summary says what the document found and what it did not resolve.
