How to cancel a gym membership when they make it hard

Gym won't let you cancel? Give written notice, stop the payment the right way, and know your rights: 14 days to cancel online sign-ups, one month in Germany.

Updated · 5 min read

Gyms are easy to join and often hard to leave. The fix is simple: give written notice that follows your contract, ask for written confirmation of the end date, and keep proof. If you joined online or by phone in the UK or the EU, you can cancel within 14 days without a reason. In Germany, contracts signed since 1 March 2022 can be ended with one month's notice once the minimum term is over. Stopping the payment alone does not end the contract, so do it in the right order.

First, find your contract terms

Before you write anything, find three things in your contract or the gym's terms:

  • The minimum term, and whether it has ended.
  • The notice clause: how much notice, from when, and how it must be given.
  • Any exit clause, for example for moving away or for illness.

If you cannot find the terms, ask the gym for a copy in writing. You are entitled to know what you signed.

Your rights, by country

Where Joined online or by phone After the minimum term Stopping the payment
UK 14 days to cancel without a reason Your contract's notice clause applies Direct Debit Guarantee refund for a payment taken in error; your card issuer must stop a recurring card payment when you ask
EU 14 days to cancel without a reason Your contract's notice clause, within national rules Ask your bank to stop the payment, after your notice
Germany 14 days, and contracts sold online must offer a cancellation button Contracts signed since 1 March 2022: one month's notice As the EU
US Rules differ by state; many states have health club laws with a short cancellation window and exits for moving or disability Your contract and state law A stop payment order with your bank on a debit or ACH payment, before it is due

In the US, the FTC's "click to cancel" rule has been struck down by a federal appeals court, so do not rely on it. California requires online cancellation when you signed up online. For your state, check the attorney general's consumer protection page.

Leaving during the minimum term

This is the hard case. Citizens Advice says you will normally have to pay the full cost of the contract if you cancel early. There are exceptions worth checking:

  • Your contract allows it, for moving away or for medical reasons. Send the proof it asks for.
  • Serious injury or illness: Citizens Advice says a UK gym should let you cancel if this stops you exercising, with evidence from a doctor.
  • A big change in your circumstances, such as losing your job: Citizens Advice says the gym should let you cancel, with evidence.
  • Unfair terms, such as a minimum term over a year or automatic renewal without your permission, may not be binding under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

If none applies, stop the next renewal now and compare the exit fee with the months left.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Write your notice. Say "I am cancelling", not "I would like to cancel". Give your full name, membership number and the date.
  2. Use their method once, and email too. If the terms say in person or by post, do that, and also send your written notice by email so the date is fixed.
  3. Give no reason unless your contract needs one to let you leave early. Reasons invite arguments.
  4. Ask for one thing: written confirmation of the end date and that no further payments will be taken, within 5 working days.
  5. Decline offers once, politely. Take a retention offer only if it is better than leaving and has no new minimum term.
  6. Stop the payment after the end date, not before. Cancelling a direct debit or a recurring card payment stops the money but does not end the contract.
  7. Keep everything: the notice, proof of sending, the confirmation, and your bank statements after the end date.

The message to send

Subject: Cancellation notice: membership 55821, Daniel Hughes

Dear PulseFit Gyms,

I am cancelling my membership, number 55821, with effect from today, 2 November 2026. My minimum term ended on 15 October 2026, and under clause 9 of my membership terms the notice period is 30 days, so my membership ends on 2 December 2026.

Please confirm in writing by Monday 9 November 2026 that my membership ends on 2 December 2026 and that no further payments will be taken after that date.

Daniel Hughes

Keep it under 120 words. Swap in your own details and your contract's clause.

If they keep charging, and where to complain

  • Charged after your end date: send your proof of notice and ask for a refund within 14 days.
  • UK: claim under the Direct Debit Guarantee from your bank, or ask your card issuer to stop the recurring payment and dispute the charge. Then the Citizens Advice consumer service, and the small claims court for larger sums.
  • EU: the gym's complaints process, then your national consumer authority or an ADR body. For a gym chain based in another EU country, the European Consumer Centre in your country helps for free.
  • US: a written complaint to the gym, then your card issuer or bank, the state attorney general and ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  • Threats of debt collection: if nothing is owed under the terms, say so and ask for written confirmation of a zero balance.

The short version

Find your notice clause, then send written notice that says "I am cancelling", with your membership number and the end date you are entitled to. Ask for written confirmation within 5 working days. Stop the payment only once the end date has passed, and use your bank or card issuer if they keep charging.

Questions

Can I just cancel the direct debit?

It stops the payments, but it does not end the contract, and the gym can still chase what you owe under it. Give written notice first, then stop the payment once the end date has passed.

The gym says I can only cancel in person or by post. Is that allowed?

Use their method once, and send written notice by email as well, so the date is fixed. In Germany, contracts sold online must have an online cancellation button.

I am still in my minimum term. Am I stuck?

Usually you pay the rest of the term, unless the contract allows an exit, for example for moving or illness. Citizens Advice says a UK gym should let you cancel if a serious injury or illness stops you exercising, with evidence from a doctor.

They keep charging me after I cancelled. What now?

Send your proof of notice and ask for a refund by a date. In the UK, the Direct Debit Guarantee gives you a full and immediate refund from your bank for a payment taken in error, and your card issuer must stop a recurring card payment when you ask.

General information, not legal advice. Rules change and depend on where you live: check the official source before you rely on a date or an amount.
