The situation
You lent a close friend £900 by bank transfer in April for a car deposit. They promised by text to repay it by August, have paid back £150, and have moved the date three times.
It asks you, for example
- Which country you are in
- Who owes you, and how close you are
- How much, when, and how you paid it
- What was said about paying it back
Hi, I hope you're keeping well. I wanted to come back to the £900 I lent you in April for the car deposit. Thanks for the £150 in July. That leaves £750.
I know things come up, but this is the third time we've moved the date, so I'd like us to fix a plan. Could you pay the £750 by 30 November? If one payment is hard, £150 on the 1st of each month from December to April would work for me.

Once you agree a plan, it puts it in writing for them to confirm, and logs each payment against the balance.

No amount, no plan and a lot of blame, so it makes them avoid you more.

Good to know
- Bank transfers and messages about paying back count. Cash with nothing written is hard to prove.
- Between family or partners, money is often seen as a gift unless something shows a loan.
- Small, regular payments agreed in writing work better than one big promise.
- Small claims court is the last step, and only worth it if they can actually pay.
