The situation
You owe $6,800 on a credit card at 28.24% APR. You have had the card for nine years, paid on time for the last two, and want a lower rate.
It asks you, for example
- Which country and state you are in
- Each card's balance, APR and minimum payment
- How much you can pay each month
- Any late payments in the last 12 months
Open with: "Hello, I'm calling about my card ending 4417. I've had it nine years and paid on time for the last 24 months. My rate is 28.24% on a balance of $6,800. I'm working to pay it down, and I'd like to ask for a lower interest rate."
If no: "Is there a temporary reduction or a promotional rate you can apply to my existing balance?"
If still no: "Could you transfer me to the team that looks at keeping customers?" Then ask again.
If yes: "Thank you. What is the new rate, from what date, is it permanent, and does it end if I miss a payment? Please confirm it in writing."
Same day: send a secure message confirming what was agreed and who you spoke to.

Good to know
- A balance transfer fee can cost more than it saves on a small balance. It checks.
- Store cards with deferred interest have a hard deadline. It plans for it first.
- Hardship plans can lower interest but may close the card. It tells you before you call.
- If the sums show you cannot keep up, it points you to free debt advice.
