The situation
A debt collection agency in England writes that you owe £1,340 on an old catalogue account. You do not recognise the amount and think your last payment was about seven years ago.
It asks you, for example
- Which country and region you are in
- Who is contacting you, and since when
- What they say you owe, and to whom
- Whether you recognise it and last paid
Subject: Your reference DC-448210: request for proof of debt
Dear Sir or Madam,
I have your letter dated 12 October 2026 about reference DC-448210, which says £1,340.00 is owed.
This letter is not an acknowledgement that I owe this debt.
Please send me:
1. The name of the original creditor and the account number.
2. A breakdown of the £1,340.00 into balance, interest and charges.
3. The date of default and the date of the last payment.
4. Proof that you own this debt or may collect it.
5. A copy of the credit agreement under sections 77 to 79 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. I enclose the £1 statutory fee, which is not a payment on the account.

Good to know
- Never pay a collector by gift card, wire transfer or crypto. That is a scam sign.
- In some places a small payment or a written yes can restart an old debt. It warns you first.
- Asking a collector to remove a debt from your credit file in return for payment often fails. Get any deal in writing.
- If court papers arrive, never ignore them. It tells you to get free advice or a lawyer that day.
